From treating, researching, and studying diseases and cures on a molecular level to the medicines and medical techniques that improve the lives of people worldwide, University of the Sciences is about moving life forward.
The roots of USciences reach back to 1821, when the institution was founded as America's first pharmacy college, the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Today, USciences continues to build on that esteemed reputation and is now home to 21 majors, including three direct-entry doctoral health professions, as well as 13 MS/MBA, seven PhD, and four post-baccalaureate certificate programs in five colleges. Our approximately 3,000 students have enrolled in our premier programs in the health sciences, ranging across pharmacy with its direct entry doctoral program to pre-med to healthcare business and health policy.
This is a university that traverses almost the entire range of the health sciences. Students may study traditional sciences such as biology and chemistry or pursue demanding careers in physical and occupational therapy. They may explore fields such as pharmacognosy on the frontiers of learning, or they may be preparing for a life shaping policy for medical and governmental institutions. With careers in healthcare continuing to grow, a USciences education not only makes for a rewarding choice, but an investment in the future.
Key to our distinctive education is a tradition of hands-on research at every level. Our undergraduates participate in highly engaging research in their earliest studies. Our alumni have contributed to progress in every dimension of the health sciences, from pioneering the use of x-rays in the 19th century to unlocking the genetic code in the 20th to discovering countless new medications.
A thriving alumni network shares a passion for exploration and discovery in pharmacy, science, and healthcare as well as for governmental, business, and administrative professions. Recent USciences graduates have continued this legacy as founders of pharmaceutical companies and companies serving the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
Our Philadelphia home is the focal point for a region that ranks second nationally in the biosciences. Some 100 hospitals, 150 research labs, five medical schools, and four specialty hospitals are easily within reach of the USciences campus. There are more than 80 colleges and universities in the immediate region that combine with historical and cultural destinations to make Philadelphia a hotbed of living and learning.
What is new and different at University of the Sciences? Recent new programs include degrees in physics, cell biology, public health, science and humanities, and exercise science and wellness management. But what is truly new every day is our students' deepening perspective on how they can make a difference in the critically important arenas of science and healthcare.
